- In a large saucepan mix together the onion, onion soup mix, evaporated milk, cream, mustard powder, grated cheese, lemon zest, a grind of black pepper and the sprinkling grate of nutmeg.
- Gently heat and stir to melt cheese and thicken. Remove from heat, add the lemon juice and leave to cool 5 minutes.
- Roll each slice of bread until its flattened to around half its usual height. (this helps it roll tighter) Spread the melted cheese mixture generously on to each slice of fresh white bread. Roll them up.
- Bake first in an oven set to 200°C (375°F) until hot through and then switch oven to grill (broil) and toast until golden and just bursting, turning the rolls over after first side toasted. Place seam side down first.
- Once toasted on both sides, remove from the oven and spread lightly on top of each roll with cold but spreadable butter and enjoy immediately. THESE ARE SIMPLE…BUT TRULY SOOOO SOOOOO GOOD! 😊
